Camino Day 24 & 25 – Leon

Time in Leon

The walk today was very short into Leon given the longer walk the previous day. This gives me nearly two full days to explore the city.

Immediately, the city has a feel of being a bit mor modern.  Mind you, I skipped the city entrance into Burgos in favor of a much more serene river walk.

The buildings are more modern, taller and a bit dense as I approach the old town city center.  I was greeted by a man waiving from the pilgrims office. I informed him from where I was from, received a stamp and did a quick tour of the mini museum.  One notable was the yellow church you will see in my photos. It was one of the earliest churches combined with a hospital purposed specifically for traveling pilgrims.

I still have not figured out the name of the stout vine like trees that line most plazas and streets here. I took a picture of the regular trimming required of these trees. I would really like to see these in full bloom.

The cathedral is impressive both day and night. Unfortunately, it was not open for tours the day I was in town.

I spent time walking the streets, sampling snacks and meals near the cathedral. I had the opportunity to try my first plate of octopus which was spectacular. I’d like to try and prepare this at home but not sure where to buy this back home.

The plaza where I stayed went through several transformations over the two days.  First, it was a playground and picnic area for many school children. At night it was filled with dinner goers. The next day the building across from me was dressed up for Holy Week. On the morning of my departure it was a farmers market.

On the way out of town I snapped a photo where I received my first Thai massage. A most unusual massage that took out the knots on my shoulders and legs. Maybe one more in Santiago to work out the longer hiking days ahead.

Finally, a shout out to all those who make this trip possible. To my fiancé Ann and my peeps at Prime who keep the work days moving along in my absence. To my supportive friends.  Also to my sister who is keeping tabs on our father as he continues his fight against cancer. Praying for you dad.

Thank you all.

Buen Camino!
